Space Gray, Silver, and Gold

A Perfect Combination!

So let’s start off looking at the design. Macbook air 2020 has not changed too much  and the overall look from the 2019 model and it’s actually quite similar to the 13-inch MacBook Pro. You have an aluminum chassis, this machine is Space Gray but you can also get it in rose gold and silver. You have a nice large force touch trackpad that’s just a hair smaller than the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Two Thunderbolt three ports and a headphone jack with speakers on each side of the keyboard.

The power button that sits in the upper right corner doubles as the touch ID and that works amazingly far better than any laptops with fingerprint scanners. I really happen to enjoy it’s super snappy. I’m logging in using it for online payments like Apple pay is great when you don’t want to fuss typing in payment information. You can just go-ahead pop your finger on it and you’re good to go.

The no-touch bar you’ll still find that only on the pro model but the entire form factor is great

Back to old school

Obviously the biggest change design-wise is the keyboard. It’s relatively the same as the new MacBook Pro’s that just came out. Obviously this model doesn’t have the touch bar but otherwise, it’s very similar.

So in new macbook air 2020, they’ve got rid of the butterfly keyboard and moved back to a scissor-style key switch similar to the ones that were on the pre-2016 MacBook’s, so scissors switches are ultimately quieter. They have more travel which is something I really like when typing. The key travel is around 1 millimeter so the butterfly switches were around 0.5 millimeters and the old MacBook’s were around 1.5.

So you’re kind of right in the middle range there and just pressing the keys feels very similar to the pre-2016 machines. You also notice the keyboard layout it’s the backlit the same thing we’ve gotten used to from Apple. The arrow keys have also moved back to the inverted T style, this keyboard feels so much nicer to type on than the butterfly keyboard and the subtle layout changes really improve the overall feel.

Not Good?

We’re also seeing the same display here which is good. It’s not the brightest panel in the world, colors are good, it gets the job done for basic things. The bezel around the display is fairly narrow. The screen on this machine is fantastic.

You get a 13.3-inch Retina display with a 16:10 aspect ratio and 2560 by 1600 resolution. This is an IPS LED panel that does not have HDR support and we’re not looking at any kind of OLED panel or anything, not something that you would expect at this price. But it does have a true tone which will adjust the white balance of the picture to match your lighting in the room and it seems to work pretty well. You might not notice it if you just leave it on all the time but once you turn it off you can really see the difference in things the screen gets very bright and produces decent color.

Again for this price, it’s just really nice to have a Retina display so really no complaints for this macbook air 2020 machine

Is it Enough?

Alright so onto the machine macbook air 2020 itself starts at $999 but it’s going to come with a little bit less powerful i3 CPU and now Apple did increase the base storage on this from 128 to 256. Now which was about time so you have increased Headroom for storage on the base model and you can also choose between 8 gigs of RAM or 16 gigs of RAM by the way if you’re a chrome user that has a pretty hefty workflow, I would say definitely check out the upgraded RAM options because 8 gigs with a lot of tabs you’re going to start seeing its low down.

You can also now choose between a dual-core or a quad-core Cull 10 gen Intel now I would suggest taking a look at the quad-core model for the extra hundred bucks for basic web browsing, it’s not going to make a massive difference but you are going to have that extra Headroom if you do want to throw more intensive tasks at this laptop.

Now as far as performance goes it’s not going to perform like a super high-end PC does or the $2,000 MacBook. But so far I can say it seems to work a lot better than the 2017 MacBook Pro offer. Basic everyday tasks and even doing some application development you won’t notice any major lag or decrease in performance while running Code with browser tabs open with a few other apps like Spotify and Slack running.

But if you build a high Code, sometimes the fan will spin up a little bit and if you do something really GPU heavy like 3d work and blender you’ll hear the fan really start to kick in. If you’re looking for something to play games on or do tests that use a lot of system resources may be doing 4k video work is something of that nature this probably won’t be enough for you. But otherwise, I’d say it’s great performance-wise.

So macbook air 2020 is probably a decent option if you’re looking for something a little bit cheaper than you just want to use casually for web browsing and things like that.

Sound Quality

Enough for you

Moving onto the sound Macbook Air 2020 have these two speakers beside the keyboard and it gets surprisingly loud. The speakers are still good louder and fuller than the iPad pro speakers but not as good as a MacBook pro speaker which pretty much has one of the best speakers on laptops on the market right now.

The audio quality doesn’t degrade at full volume. There is no rattling around or anything. It sounds very crisp and clear. Obviously it’s not going to get a superb base or anything like that with such small speakers but for a laptop, I would say they’re doing a pretty good job.

Battery Life

Better one?

Finally, we look at the battery life. So this Macbook Air 2020 model should last you well over a day if you’re just using it for simple tasks like browsing provided, you don’t have sound and the screen brightness cranked all the way up.

If you’re using it for web or mobile development I would say it can get close to a full workday. Now Apple is also claiming all-day battery life on the sky which is around 11 hours however you can get more about nine to nine and a half hours if you don’t have a whole bunch of resource-heavy processes running.

It comes with a 30-watt wall charger and takes just over three hours to fully charge it. When plugged in on a little battery I find that for a workday it works quite well to start off with a full charge and then just plug it in around lunchtime or so if you can and when you come back you should be good for the rest of the day.

So around that range, the entire package, for the most part, has been solid throughout my experience.

Makes it bad ?

So lastly there are a few downsides of macbook air 2020 that would like to mention-

  • There’s also no WiFi six support like we’ve seen on the iPad pro.
  • The webcam. The technical term for the webcam on this machine is called a potato uh-habit’s a 720p camera. It does not look good at all for an Apple company that also manufactures phones with great cameras. I don’t really understand why we can’t even get a half-decent camera here. If you’re looking for something with a good webcam then this is not it.
  • Well, I’m not a huge fan of only having two ports on the side. This can make sense for some people who have gone completely wireless but personally I still have to do things like plug-in external monitors, plug-in power cable maybe connect a device to run a test for apps, plug-in SD cards, and so on. So if that is an issue for you I recommend getting a passive power USB hub.
  • The heat issues. So this laptop isn’t thermal throttling or overheating it’s designed to run hot now it’s pretty much running hot on a constant basis even with simple programs open. The CPU is running warm. It’s designed to do this, it’s just something to point out.
  • The Bluetooth still has issues that seem to exist on most Macs. If you’re using a Bluetooth headset often the sound quality degrades unless you switch the setting in the sound preferences like when there’s a sound being played from the device simulator if you’re doing iOS development or sometimes when you enter video chats and things like that.
